With the wide availability of CBD products on the market today, it’s an easy product to try out to see if it’s right for you. However, with that level of availability comes a caveat; Many companies are manufacturing CBD products without adequate quality controls in place. Without adherence to quality guidelines, you can’t be sure of the quality, concentration, and purity of the product.

How Safe is Your CBD?

There are many benefits to be had from CBD, but sometimes, what you don’t know can harm you.

CBD is a cannabinoid derived from the cannabis plant. The healthful benefits of CBD are the topic of much research, and many people have already found it to be a helpful part of their daily routine.

Many beneficial antioxidant compounds are found in CBD, but the presence of contaminants and adulterants can eclipse those benefits. Because of this, adequate testing is essential to ensure the product you purchase is safe to use made per the highest standards of quality control.

Testing is Not Standardized

Standard lab tests for cannabis include screening for pesticides, mold, mildew, solvents, and various other contaminants. In many cases, however, the medium in which the CBD is delivered might not be subject to the same level of screening.

Other issues that might affect the testing process include state legislation. Because the industry is as yet unregulated, there is a massive gap between federal and state guidelines.

Some states still do not have legislation around the legal sale of CBD and cannabis. In those states, no testing is required whatsoever. Other states, though they are legally allowed to produce and sell cannabis products, do not enforce testing standards.

The FDA has classified CBD as a dietary supplement, which is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it allows for broader distribution of CBD products, which is why we see them everywhere from grocery stores to gas stations. On the other hand, it excludes these products from having to undergo FDA safety and efficacy reviews.

The FDA has managed to block some companies from selling and producing deceptive or low-quality products, but there is no federal regulation to back them up. As a result, nothing is stopping some companies from making false claims about the safety and potency of their products. This is where you need to pick up the ball and run with it.

The Clean Label Project is Your Assurance of Quality and Purity

The Clean Label Project advocates labeling transparency products meant for the consumer market. They award their certification to companies whose testing goes beyond FDA standards for heavy metals, pesticides, and plasticizers, and emphasizes product purity above all else.

In a 2019 study, the Clean Label Project tested 242 products from more than 25 top brands, including CBD tinctures, CBD oils, gummies, topicals, and pet-focused CBD products. This is what they found:

  • The top ten brands contain an average 34ppb of lead.
  • Forty-five percent of all products claiming to have no THC contained measurable levels of THC. All of these were full-spectrum products.
  • Thirty percent of tested products claimed inaccurate CBD content by plus or minus 20 percent.
  • One product actually contained 700 percent more CBD than stated on the label.
  • Ten products contained no CBD at all.
  • The average amount of phthalates (plasticizers) present in each product was 1,091 ppb, three times the average of what you would typically find in a consumer product.

What You Can Do To Ensure Your CBD Is Safe

The truth is, if certain microorganisms are present in your CBD product, they can cause unwanted effects such as bacterial overproduction, leading to infection or worsening of systemic health conditions.

If you have underlying health concerns or severe allergies, you should be acutely aware of what you are putting into your body. Certain microbes, bacteria, and fungi can exacerbate those issues.

When you are choosing a CBD product and supplier, the safest bet is to do your homework to ensure you know exactly what you are putting in your body.

Pure Organics offers high-quality CBD products that are tested to the highest standards by a third-party laboratory. As a result of our commitment to quality and purity, the FDA has awarded us a certification of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), so you can be confident that our products are consistent and safe for you to take.
